Zimbabwean Government Refutes Claims That Schools Are Opening On February 15
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has dismissed reports that schools will be reopening on 15 February 2021. The government insisted that schools will remain closed until further notice.
The Ministry’s statement on the reopening of schools comes after circulation of fake reports on social media claiming that schools will be reopening on 15 February, in order to allow the authorities to administer a Covid-19 vaccine to all the pupils.
In a statement the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education said,
“The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education takes this opportunity to advise its valued learners, parents, guardians, teachers and other stakeholders, that contrary to that fake social media report, the 2021 School Calendar for all primary and secondary schools will be announced in due course, hence schools remain closed until an official announcement is made through the Ministry’s usual official methods of communication.
“It has come to the attention of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education that a fake social media report claiming that Government will open schools on 15 February 2021 in order to administer non-voluntary Covid-19 vaccine injections on learners and teachers is circulating.”
Last year schools closed in March due to the coronavirus-induced national lockdown. Students who were writing examinations went back to school in September so that they could sit for the November Zimsec exams which started on 1 December.
Schools were supposed to open for the first term of 2021 on Monday 4 January. However, due to a surge in Covid-19 cases, the government implemented a strict national lockdown.
According to iHarare, the Ministry also said that the date for the reopening of schools will be announced in due course through the proper channels and structures.
