PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has congratulated Kenyan President-elect William Ruto, who beat his main rival Mr Raila Odinga in a hotly contested poll that was held in the eastern African country last week.

This followed the declaration of Mr Ruto as the fifth Kenyan President by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission of Kenya (IEBC).

Mr Ruto garnered 7 176 141 votes against Mr Odinga, who got 6 942 930,

“Congratulations to @WilliamsRuto on his election as the next President of Kenya,” President Mnangagwa said in a tweet.

He continued, “I am confident he will serve his nation, his people, and our continent with distinction.

Mr. Ruto praised the electoral commission, calling them “heroes,” and declared, “There is no turning back. In the future, we are looking. To advance, all hands must be on deck.

In his bid to become Kenya’s fifth president, the 55-year-old made the country’s class disparities the centerpiece of his campaign, pledging to reward low-income “hustlers” and mocking Kenya’s political dynasties.

As Kenyans awaited the official results of the election held over a week ago, Mr. Ruto, the leader of the Kenya Kwanza (Kenya First) Alliance, had appeared to be leading longtime opposition leader Mr. Odinga.

Mr. George Wajackoyah of the Roots Party received 61 969 votes, while Mr. David Mwaure of the Agano Party received 31 987 votes, or 0.23 percent (0.44 percent).

Mr. Odinga was seeking the president for the sixth time, having previously ran in 1997, 2007, 2013, and 2017.

Only 14 million of Kenya’s 22 million registered voters cast ballots in the general election of 2022.

According to the Kenyan constitution, the victor of the presidential election must receive at least 50% plus one of all votes cast as well as at least 25% of the votes cast in each of the country’s 47 counties.
