Man Commit Suicide After Assaulting Ex Wife’s Grandmother Over Witchcraft Allegations:

A 40-year old Mvurwi man fatally assaulted his ex-wife’s grandmother with a log accusing her of bewitching his 8-year-old son and then proceeded to commit suicide.

According to iHarare, 40-year-old Previous Mereki of Dahwe Farm in Mvurwi accused 71-year-old Faveri Faides of Brajule farm of witchcraft and severely beat her up after his son had returned from her house in a bad state of health.

Mereki then committed suicide by drowning himself in a dam.

Inspector Fidelis Mundembe the Mashonaland provincial spokesperson confirmed the development saying Meriki’s 8-year-old son, Innocent fell unconscious after visiting his great grandmother.

In the morning of 30 November, Mereki then confronted Mrs Faides, and allegedly dragged her into her kitchen and pulled a log out of the stove and repeatedly assaulted her.

A neighbour by the name of James Bishop who heard the old lady screaming for help rushed to her aid and upon arrival, he found her unconscious and bleeding from the mouth and ears.

On the next day, a police report was made by the victim’s daughter who had been informed of the incident by Mr Bishop.

On the third day after the assault, Mrs Faides’ condition was deteriorating and she was rushed to Mvurwi Hospital.

Mereki was arrested on December 3 and he appeared before the Guruve Magistrate’s Court on assault charges and was remanded out of custody pending the recovery of Mrs Faides who then died the following day on the 4th of December.

Insp Mundembe reported that when Mereki learned that her son’s great grandmother had succumbed to the injuries he had caused, he then committed suicide.

He disappeared for some days, and Agrippa Nomatter of Bradjule Farm discovered his body floating in the waters of Rhimbic Dam.

ZRP Mvurwi attended the scene and retrieved the body, No visible injuries were noticed except for the 20kg stone which was tied to Mereki’s waist reported Insp Mundembe.
