Lieutenant General Douglas Nyikayaramba Succumbs To Covid-19:

In a sad update, Former Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Chief of Staff, retired Lieutenant-General Douglas Nyikayaramba has died from Covid-19 related complications. General Nyikayaramba was Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique after he was retired by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2019.

According to national broadcaster ZBC News, the news of General Nyikayaramba’s death was announced by President Mnangagwa this Tuesday during the first cabinet briefing at State House.

Former Zanu PF politician and Norton Member of Parliament Temba Mliswa also took to social media platform Twitter to mourn the death of Ambassador Nyikayaramba.

Before his retirement, Nyikayaramba was the former Chief of Staff, Administration at the Zimbabwe National Army where he held the rank of Major General.

In March 2019, Nyikayamba was one of the four senior military officials, all with the ranks of Major General (or the Air Force equivalent of Air Vice Marshal) who were retired from active service and posted to the diplomatic corps. All four generals were promoted on retirement to the rank of Lieutenant General and the Air Force of Zimbabwe Equivalent of Air Marshal.

The other senior generals who were promoted together with Lieutenant General Douglas Nyikayaramba (retired) are Lieutenant General Martin Chedondo (retired), Lieutenant General Anselem Sanyatwe and Air Marshal Sheba Shumbayawonda.

The circumstances of the General’s death are yet to be disclosed in detail. Other senior military generals who have died from Covid-19 include former Air Force of Zimbabwe commander, retired Air Chief Marshal Perence Shiri and former Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services boss, retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi and former Foreign Affairs Minister, retired Lieutenant General Sibusiso Busi (S.B) Moyo.
