Four Artisanal Miners Drown After Boat Overturned In Flooded Sanyati River:

Four Gokwe artisanal miners drowned Friday afternoon when a boat ferrying them across a flooded Sanyati River capsized.

The deceased who were identified as Ngonidzashe Mapfumo (48), Nyasha Mapfumo, Promise Gwade, and Tinashe Matesanwa drowned when their boat capsized.

According to iHarare, Police officer commanding Hurungwe district, Chief Superintendent Helena Mahonde confirmed the tragic incident which happened on the 5th of February 2021.

According to the police report, the tragic incident happened when the quartet was returning to their rural homes in Mujinga, Tengwe, Hurungwe district

The quartet is alleged to have found the Sanyati River flooded. Stranded with no other option, the quartet is alleged to have approached a ferry operator, Frances Mukakatanwa who offered to help them cross for a US$10 fee.

They accepted the offer and went on to load their goods onto the makeshift boat. However, after venturing about 160m into the turbulent waters, the boat was reportedly hit by a water wave and capsized.

The ferry operator and one of the passengers Josphat Mapfumo are lucky to be alive as they managed to swim to the shores, while the now deceased four men were swept away and drowned.

Meanwhile, two bodies have since been recovered while a search is ongoing to recover the other two. Chief Superintendent Helena Mahonde urged members of the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers.

“We continue to urge members of the public not to cross flooded rivers as this leads to unnecessary loss of lives as is the case in the drowning of the four people,” said Mahonde.
