Earth Tremors Hit Chipinge Again:
An earthquake with a magnitude of 4,3 on the Ritcher’s scale has struck Manica province in Mozambique and the tremors were felt in some parts of Chipinge district.
According to the Manica Post, villagers revealed that the tremors were heard at around 7 pm.
Moses Zakaria from Ngaone Primary School reported that the tremors were heavy.
Tarwira Chitombo who resides at Mount Selinda Hig School said rooftops rumbled.
“We were watching television when we felt the tremors and the subsequent rumbling of rooftops which lasted for a few seconds.
Coaster Maposa from Chikore said the tremors left his family shell shocked.
“The rumbling of the roof reminded us of the tremor that occurred in 2018. My children were terrified but I comforted them and told them that everything will be alright,” he said.
In May 2019, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) revealed to the local Daily News that a slight tremor had hit Chipinge. MSD’s James Ngoma said:
On Saturday, there was a slight tremor in Chipinge beacon area but there were no major effects.
The last earthquake that hit Zimbabwe to be recorded again occurred on a Saturday, towards the end of December 2018. A statement issued by the MSD soon after the December 2018 earthquake reads:
We have recorded an earthquake which occurred in Manicaland on the border between Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The Earthquake was felt by some people in Chipinge, Mutare, Masvingo, Harare.
The earthquake in Manicaland, South Eastern Zimbabwe occurred at 0537 UTC, wide. 0737AM Local time and the coordinates 20.644, and 32.801°E.
The magnitude and epicentre of the earthquake were determined to be about Magnitude 5.5 and the epicentre is 53km SSE of Chipinge.
Manicaland experiences tremors from time to time due to a phenomenon that is known as plate tectonics which occurs along with the East African Rift System which extends into Mozambique.
