Artisanal Miner Killed After Invading RioZim Limited Mine:

A 36-YEAR-OLD artisanal miner from Chakari in Kadoma was last Friday shot and killed by a RioZim Limited mine security guard after illegal miners trespassed and gained access to one of the mine’s claims.

It is reported by the Herald that one of the guards fired live ammunition at the now deceased, identified as Timothy Mpofu (35), resulting in his death.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson, Inspector Margaret Chitove confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway.

Group corporate affairs executive, Mr Wilson Gwatiringa, said illegal artisanal miners had been a perennial problem for many years for Riozim.

Meanwhile, there has been another human-wildlife conflict recorded in Gwanda. A man lost his life after he was attacked by a hippopotamus on Sunday.

The now-deceased Nicholas Ndlovu was on his way to work at Freda Mine when he came across a grazing hippo that attacked and left him with fatal injuries.

Ndlovu, 37, was ferried to Gwanda Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon admission.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident before urging villagers to approach water bodies with caution.

The Chronicle reports that the hippopotamus is suspected to be part of two hippos that have reportedly turned Garanyemba Dam into their home.
